On My Bookshelf: 2009

This is a list of some (but not all) of the books I read in 2009. These are all worth mentioning, though. If you like any of them (or profoundly dislike any of them) let me know. I always love to talk books.

  • Case and the Dreamer (and other stories) by Theodore Sturgeon -- Three old shorts from a great SF writer.
  • The Mask of Atreus by A.J. Hartley -- Thriller about ancient Greeks, Nazis, and murder.
  • The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky -- One of my favorite Russian authors.
  • Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman -- Fantasy by a great writer and fast becoming a modern classic.
  • Skinwalker by Faith Hunter -- Jane Yellowrock, a Native American shapeshifter who hunts Vampires.
  • The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams -- The re-reading continues.
  • The Weird of the White Wolf by Michael Moorcock -- Third book in the famous Elric series.
  • The Dark River by John Twelve Hawks -- Sequel to the (don't call it SF) thriller, The Traveler.
  • Life, the Universe, and Everything -- Part 3 of the Re-Reading.
  • The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams -- Part 2 of the Re-reading.
  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams -- Re-reading this one for my son to hear. Every bit as good as I remembered.
  • The Man Who Loved China by Simon Winchester -- Another great non-fiction tale by Winchester.
  • Emperor: The Gates of Rome by Conn Iggulden -- First of the long-running series about Julius Caesar.
  • The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan -- Book 2 of the Percy Jackson series.
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson -- Much lauded debut mystery by the late author.
  • The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan -- First of the 5-book YA series about a boy with Poseidon for a father.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Volume 4 -- More of Buffy in this graphic novel.
  • Bonds of Vengeance by David B. Coe -- Book 3 in the Winds of the Foreland series.
  • Creepy Vol. 2 -- More of the classic '60s horror comic.
  • The Dylan Dog Case Files by Tiziano Sclavi -- Collection of Italian graphic-novels about a "nightmare investigator."
  • Flash of Genius by John Seabrook -- Non-fiction articles about the inspiration of inventions.
  • The Accidental Time Machine by Joe Haldeman -- The SF Master's unique take on a time-travel story.
  • Jimmy Page: Magus, Musician, Man by George Case -- Detailed biography of a rock legend.
  • Mad Kestrel by Misty Massey -- Excellent debut novel of pirate and magic.
  • Split Images by Elmore Leonard -- One of the many by this master of the thriller.
  • Lilith: A Snake in the Grass by Jack L. Chalker -- First book in the Four Lords of the Diamond series. First book I've read by Chalker. Not great, but good enough that I'll try book 2.
  • Just After Sunset by Stephen King -- Latest short story collection by Mr. King.
  • Seeds of Betrayal by David B. Coe -- Book 2 in the Winds of the Forelands series.
  • Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell -- Non-fiction look at what factors form success.
  • Coraline by Neil Gaiman -- Children's story written in the ghoulish fashion of old.
  • Among Schoolchildren by Tracy Kidder -- Non-fiction look at the education system in the U.S.
  • The Blade Itself by Marcus Sakey -- Well-recieved debut thriller (2007).
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Volume 3 -- More of the wonderful graphic novel.
  • Havana Nocturne by T. J. English -- Excellent history of the Mob in Cuba.

Finally, here are links to the nightstands of previous years:
