On My Bookshelf: 2008

This is a list of some (but not all) of the books I read in 2008. These are all worth mentioning, though. If you like any of them (or profoundly dislike any of them) let me know. I always love to talk books.

  • Creepy Vol. 1 -- An anthology of 1960s comic Creepy featuring Issues 1-5.
  • Killing Floor by Lee Child -- First Jack Reacher novel.
  • Heaven and Hell by John Jakes -- Last of the Civil War Trilogy.
  • Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Vol. 2 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- Still self-explanatory, I hope.
  • Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer -- recount of a tragic expedition up Mt. Everest that took many lives.
  • Duma Key by Stephen King -- King leaves Castle Rock, Maine for Florida in his latest, excellent novel.
  • Case Histories by Kate Atkinson -- Literary mystery novel that was on many best novel lists.
  • Old Flames by Jack Ketchum -- Two novellas, this one and his highly controversial Right to Life.
  • Persepolis 1 + 2 by Marjane Satrapi -- Graphic novel memoir of growing up female in Iran during the '80s.
  • Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig -- Classic 70s philosophy book.
  • Hide and Seek by Jack Ketchum -- Another novella by one of the best horror writers alive.
  • All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren -- Beloved classic well worth the praise.
  • Rules of Ascension by David B. Coe -- First in a fantasy series by a friend. Lots of fun.
  • Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready -- Vampire novel by an author I met at Ravencon.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 (Vol 1 and 2) -- Graphic novels by the Joss-man himself.
  • Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya -- best-seller from the 1950s about India.
  • Bitterwood by James Maxey -- Fantasy where Dragons rule the world and men are slaves.
  • World War Z by Max Brooks -- A faux-history of the Zombie War.
  • Manhunt by James L. Swanson -- Non-fiction about the 12-Day hunt for John Wilkes Booth.
  • The League of Extraordinary Gentleman by Alan Moore -- Classic graphic novel.
  • Mattimeo by Brian Jacques -- Another Redwall book.
  • The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell -- Classic discussion on myths and legends.
  • Cell by Stephen King -- King in Classic horror mode. Lots of fun.
  • Love and War by John Jakes -- Second in the Civil War Trilogy.
  • Fool Moon by Jim Butcher -- Book 2 in the Dresden Files. Great mystery/fantasy series
